Texas based artist Rivkah presents in the first chapter of her UME Shojo Steady Beat, a story that is both simple and layered.

It introduces us to Leah Winters and her sister Sarai and begins with a secret.  The kind that in Texas can still be dangerous.  Sarai is gay.  Keah doesn’t have this confirmed at first and a mysterious phone call, followed by an even weirder situation adds up to further confusion.  Throw in a single mother who happens to be a Senator, a flaming veterinarian who likes to take in strays, a crazy street musician and a hot topless guy and you have the ingredients of a perfect beginning.

Leah, Sarai and Leah’s best friend Paige are the type of gals that would make you really wish Manga girls could be real.  Rivkah herself is a good substitute for a real Leah, as evidenced by the books front photo, as well as by my personal experience of meeting her.  She’s quite the sweetheart, the kind of gal there’s a rarity of (although the comic field seems to be full of them, Becky Cloonan, Raina Tegelmeier, Coleen Doran, Jill Thompson, Amanda Conner, etc., etc.).

Most of the charm in the book comes from Rivkah’s art.  While dialogue, plot and storytelling are very strong, it is the new Manga style that Rivkah has only been at work on for 3 years (NOT that you could tell) that are the true seller.

Rivkah’s art isn’t just charming though.  There are some scenes that are just downright beautiful and a sight to behold.  The detail she puts in the backgrounds or simply the close-up of a guitar or bench are amazing.  For some true MASTERY of art period, one just has to the two page spread with the skyline.

The crazy thing is she just keeps getting better and this means Book 2 is something no one will want to miss, but make sure you’re caught up with Book 1 to see burgeoning talent and a damn fine read.
